Oh Wait, I Live in Georgia

The other day, I was happily buying sundries at Walmart (I want to “Save Money, Live Better”) and there was a morbidly obese woman in a motorized shopping cart registering several complaints with the manager.   As I passed them, I suddenly experienced a feeling of déjà vu.  You see, this was not the first time (or even second time) that I have come across this situation at Walmart.  From as much as I can recall, I have seen no less than 4 obese women in expensive motorized carts (provided to them by Walmart) complaining about how Walmart has done them wrong.  As I started to think about why I would necessarily see so many self-righteous obese women in one place, I remembered that I was not only at Walmart, but I also live in Georgia.

Don’t get me wrong – Georgia is a beautiful state with friendly people and Atlanta has the same conveniences as most larger cities, but every once in a while, something happens to remind me that I do indeed live in Georgia – where you may soon be able to carry your gun to church with you because you never know when God might need it.

Here’s a perfect example…a couple of Saturdays ago, my husband and I were driving back home after a round of golf and were stopped at a red light.  Like most people, I look around casually to see what’s happening as I’m riding along and in a truck next to me, there was a guy wearing a sweater.  Considering the fact that it was 93 degrees out at the time, it seemed odd, so I looked over again to see the strange design.  To my dismay, my eyes were deceiving me – the man in the truck next to us was not wearing a sweater.  As a matter of fact, he wasn’t wearing a shirt AT ALL.  As the light changed to green, the man’s truck pulled away from the light revealing his “No Fat Chicks” bumper sticker and his “This truck has balls” balls hanging from the hitch.  Without missing a beat, my husband turned to me and said, “Welcome to Georgia, babe”.

Running a Country is Messy, Boys!

I was skimming an article this morning written by David Brooks of the NY Times and something he said really hit me.  He said, “I used to think that the political leaders could avert fiscal suicide.  But it’s now clear change will not be led from Washington.”  A feeling of sadness, anger, and frustration overwhelmed me coupled with a feeling of hopelessness.  Then, I began to think about it some more – isn’t that the job of our Senators and Representatives?  To lead?  The ones that we have chosen to speak on our behalf? The ones who WE THE PEOPLE pay with our taxes?

The reason Mr. Brooks’ words spoke to me is because I watched the recent State of the Union address.  It was so clear to me the deep political divide among those who “serve”.   There seems to be no level of cooperation on either side, so NOTHING is getting done.  Both sides are so focused on the next election, that the immediate, dire needs of their constituents are being ignored to make way for personal political agendas.  The thing is, if you do right by the people, they will do right by you and you won’t have to worry about the next election.

One of the worst offenders is Congressman John Boehner from Ohio.   I am certainly not naïve enough to believe that Mr. Boehner, by himself, is responsible for the downfall of America, but fighting a proposal that is presented solely because it came from the Democratic side of the room is not helpful, nor constructive.  Face it, neither side is going to get a Health Care bill that is completely what they wanted or a Jobs bill that is going to include/exclude everything either.  The reason we elect officials is so they can investigate all the options and create the best bill they can – which means that both parties will more than likely have to come to some sort of compromise.  That’s what this country was founded on and I believe the folks serving in our Congress need to be reminded of that simple fact.

Obama won the presidential election on his platform of hope and change – memories of people (myself included) chanting “Yes we can” are still in my mind.  Unfortunately, not much has changed and many people are losing hope. I appreciate President Obama’s attempt to “reach across the aisle” to get Republican support for his proposals, but frankly, with the state of the congress right now, HE needs to be the one to do something or things are going to continue to deteriorate.  I do realize the mess he walked into and I do not expect the economy to be fixed overnight, but it’s time to step up to the plate.  Running a country is messy, boys.  Time to get your hands dirty!

It occurred to me that the people in Congress are so far removed from the realities of life in America that I no longer feel that they represent me.  If you are a first or second term Senator or Representative, then you probably still remember what real life is like.  Do yourself and your constituents a favor – get out of Washington for a while.  I’m not suggesting that resignations are in order, I’m merely suggesting that spending meaningful time with ordinary people who are trying to live their lives from day-to-day might do some good.  They don’t want your pity or even your friendship.  They just want you to do right by them.  Then, and only then, will you begin to see changes happening and see hope reappear.

Excellence Tour 2010 (Wooooohoooo!)

In January of every year, I (like most people) take stock of my life and ponder what I hope to accomplish in the New Year. After some thought, I decided that I was going to make 2010 my Year of Excellence. Notice that I did not say perfection, but excellence. Now I realize that you are probably scratching your head and wondering what I mean by this, so allow me to explain. ..

Pat Riley said that “Excellence is not about having things, or about having recognition, or about having money or power or position. It’s about being part of something worthwhile – where people can go above and beyond”. Well, this quote is going to be my mission statement for 2010.

I have set up a couple of guidelines for my journey:

I will not allow negativity and pessimism to poison my life. Did you know that you can think positive thoughts on purpose?! Many motivational speakers talk about this, but they make it sound easy – you have to be vigilant and it takes some work, but you will reach a point where ejecting negative, stinky thoughts from your mind will become effortless.

I will praise others for their successes. It’s an easy initial reaction to question “Why not me?” Keep in mind that there is a time for all things and celebrating someone else’s success will not diminish your triumphs when they come. Plus, we never know how important that success may really mean to the other person.

I will not dwell on what life owes me. Life doesn’t owe us diddly-squat. The fact that we are alive and breathing in itself is a miracle, so be thankful for what you have and be joyful in your journey.

I will do nice things for people who can’t really benefit me. Do nice things simply for the joy of doing them. Especially if you’re in a bad mood or just feeling particularly cranky, do something nice for someone else. Even something as small as paying the toll for the person in line behind you – it will lighten your mood. The funny thing is, the more you do, the better you feel.

I will be friendly to everyone – even if they were not friendly to me. For all you know, you might be the only person that has been nice to them all day…or all week. Why not be the highlight of someone’s day or week!

I’ve taken this list of 5 things and posted it on the mirror in my bathroom so I will be reminded of what I promised myself I would do. I know that there will be times that I will falter and not live up to these standards, but stay tuned and I will post periodic updates to let you in on my progress (or lack thereof…out stinky thought! Yea, first victory!) If you would like to join me, that would be great and I would love to hear how you are doing in your journey as well!

The Small Things…

For me, it was a typical Saturday – a little bit of shopping with my mom, a little bit of lunch, a little more shopping, etc. As we moved on from store to store after enjoying a lovely lunch, I suddenly realized that the 3 glasses of iced tea I had consumed were beginning to press upon me and they wanted OUT. Thankfully, the store had a public restroom and I was able to avert any serious consequences that may have occurred due to my lack of proper planning. (Thank you Shoe Carnival!)

This little incident really got me thinking – when I was younger, there were very few restrooms for public use. Restrooms were usually located in some dark corner of the stock room and you had to navigate the obstacle course of boxes and other miscellaneous items in order to answer the call of nature. And the best part was that these strictly utilitarian rooms were guarded by the employees like they were protecting the Arc of the Covenant. How do you know that, you ask? Well, when I was 19, I used to be one of those employees – only I didn’t mind letting people use the restroom in our store. It was a rare occurrence and you could tell that the customer wouldn’t be asking unless they too were trying to avert a possibly volatile situation.

So why write about public restrooms? Well, since I find myself on golf courses quite often, I have developed a particular fascination with their facilities, and how female-friendly they are. (Please note: I am not a feminist in particular, but I do feel the need to point out that women (just by the way we are made) have certain needs that should be recognized by businesses if they want our valuable consumer dollars.) And I would also like to give a hearty thank you and nod of appreciation to those locations who have taken this into consideration. Because if I’m not thinking about my powder room needs, I can focus on the task at hand – giving you my hard-earned money.

Eagle Ridge “Resort” and Spa

Eagle Ridge is located in Galena, IL, just 20 minutes from Dubuque, IA. As someone who was raised in (and has lived in) several different areas in Illinois, the hilly terrain of Galena is a refreshing change to the flat farmland that so typically describes Illinois.

In my most recent trip to Galena, it was not to review the town, but Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa. Of course, that name would be familiar to any golf fanatic, as it is home to three challenging 18-hole golf courses and one executive 9-hole course. Eagle Ridge is located in the Galena Territory and is made up of 6800 acres of lush hills with the golf courses and villas carved into the landscape.

The main building at Eagle Ridge or “The Inn” is decorated in dark wood and richly colored fabrics that lends itself to a very welcoming and comfortable feeling when you arrive. There are 2 types of rooms at the resort. You can choose to have a room right off of the main Inn or rent a villa.

The villas are furnished, one bedroom apartments that include a washer/dryer and a full kitchen stocked with dishes, silverware, etc in each unit. Our villa was woodsy, comfortable, and clean, however, the bathroom hadn’t been updated in quite a while. The avocado green shower (with non-slip adhesive stickers) was a blast from the past and made the property feel very dated. It wasn’t exactly what you would expect to find at a resort, but on a whole, the accommodations were equivalent to that of a 2 star hotel. On a side note, our villa was below grade (almost like a basement apartment) and had a partially enclosed, outdoor stairwell leading down to it. If I was a woman traveling alone or just traveling with another female, this below grade location would be very creepy and very possibly unsafe. Galena, in general, has a very low crime rate, but I don’t see why I should tempt fate. I would suggest staying at the Inn or requesting a 1st floor villa when making reservations.

The main restaurants at Eagle Ridge are located at the Inn. There is a fine dining restaurant and a casual pizzeria. The fine dining establishment had a nice variety of items on the menu, but from appetizer to dessert, the meal was unimpressive and we were quite disappointed. Most of the food was of mediocre quality and it appeared that more time was spent writing the descriptions of the menu items than on the actual recipes themselves. One redeeming quality was the breakfast buffet that they offered each morning. The quality and variety was more in line with what you would normally find in a resort environment.

Although I am somewhat spoiled when it comes to good pizza because I am from Chicago, the pizzeria had respectable pizza and it was perfect after a long day on the golf course.

As with most golf courses, there were casual dining restaurants in all of the clubhouses. The final restaurant we visited was Spike’s at the General. The atmosphere was pleasant as the restaurant looked out onto the first hole and practice green. Our meal at Spike’s was the best of the trip, however, the quality of the wait staff had something to be desired. When we asked for an extra napkin (we ordered ribs…), the 16 year old waitress offered us the napkin that had been adorning the tray she had been using to serve meals on. Also, the bus boy stacked extra place settings from other tables on the end of our table. If we had been at Denny’s or IHOP, we wouldn’t have thought twice about it, but this was supposed to be a restaurant at a resort. We, by no means, are that particular about our surroundings, but I think by now you see a theme building – these are NOT things that are typically seen at a resort.

Of course I couldn’t go to Eagle Ridge and not go to the spa during our visit. I mean, what kind of review could I possibly offer if I left out information about the spa? Anyway, I arrived 15 minutes prior to my service as requested and the girl at the front desk checked me in and whisked me to the locker room. It was drenched in soothing colors and lush fabrics. I already felt relaxed! Once I changed into my robe, I moved into the dimly lit waiting room. As with most spas, there was cucumber water and tea for us to sip as we listened to soothing sounds of waterfalls and bamboo chimes blowing gently in the wind until… Apparently, the spa was directly under the convention/meeting room area and the peaceful sounds of waterfalls were interrupted by the sounds of banquet catering carts with loose wheels rolling across the floor above us. Surprisingly enough, I was quite amused by this – almost to the point of outright laughter. It was just one more missed opportunity – the opportunity to demonstrate that they truly deserved to be considered a “resort”. Although I feel that noise from the catering carts could have ruined the spa experience for some, the services I received were wonderful and I would recommend the spa to men and women alike.

Even though we enjoyed the challenging and picturesque golf courses at Eagle Ridge, I hesitate to call it a “resort”. Most resorts pride themselves on taking care of the little things – Eagle Ridge fell short in so many areas that I can only recommend it for the golf and the spa. On a scale from 1-10, I would have to give Eagle Ridge Resort an overall score of 5.

If you are a golf fanatic like me and want to make the trip, my suggestion would be to stay at a bed and breakfast nearby and drive to the resort. There are many quaint bed and breakfast establishments within a 10-15 minute car ride that offer all of the comforts of home, along with a lovely, hot, homemade breakfast to help you start the day out right. On the way back to your room after golf, stop in downtown Galena for a bite to eat – You’ll be glad you did!

Barkley’s Swing – Watch It While You Can

I know that most of the golf world is talking about Tiger’s triumphant return to the links this week (and I’m certainly happy to see him), but I’m going to go out on a limb and talk about something else….

A couple of years ago, I was watching a charity golf event on TV and the participants were made up of the usual folks – celebrities, athletes, and such. Being a fan of that sort of event, I settled in with a drink in hand and the cat in my lap and I have to say that I was not prepared for what I was about to witness. Samuel L. Jackson teed off beautifully as usual, and on this day, he was accompanied by basketball great, Charles Barkley.

Charles leaned over, teed up his ball, and lined up like a pro. A few seconds went by and there it was. The most distinctive, seizure-inducing swing I’ve ever seen. It was like no other… breathtaking… even beautiful in a grotesque sort of way, like going to the circus just for the freak show. It was unsettling, but I just couldn’t turn away!

For the rest of the event, I didn’t care about all of the celebrities showing off their golf savvy. All I wanted to do was watch Charles play. The cat didn’t quite share my enthusiasm (he jumped down and left the room) and I think it may have had something to do with the fact that I kept yelling at the TV when the cameraman would focus on the other golfers.

So, as I mentioned, it’s been a couple of years since I witnessed the glorious phenomena that is Charles Barkely’s swing and I had all but forgotten it until the other day. I was innocently watching the Golf Channel (as I have been known to do) and during a commercial break, I saw an ad for The Haney Project (http://www.thegolfchannel.com/haneybarkley/) and I felt that same unsettling feeling once again. I knew immediately that this show was destined to be MY American Idol. (Please do not attempt to contact me between 8:00 and 9:00pm CST for the next several Mondays – you know where I’ll be.) Since Mr. Barkley will be in the very capable hands of Tiger’s swing coach, the swing that I bizarrely fell in love with is undoubtedly not long for this world…and I will wear black on the day that his breathtaking swing fades gently away.

Dreams of golf

It’s February and there are 6+ inches of snow on the ground, so naturally, my thoughts have turned to warmer weather and the beginning of the golf season. Since my local course currently resembles the frozen Alaskan tundra, I have to settle for watching the big boys play. However, watching them has inspired me to get ready for the new golf season.

As you may have already guessed, I am an avid golfer with a respectable game, so I frequent golf courses around the country. In the coming days, I hope to provide useful reviews of golf facilities from a female perspective. Although the game of golf is basically the same for men and women (you need to stay in the fairway and putt well for a good score), there are certain amenities that women notice or need that are not required (or even noticed) by our male counterparts. For instance, are there any on-course bathroom facilities or is it Port-O-Potty central? Are the holes challenging, but still female friendly?

Over the next several weeks, I will post reviews of courses I have already been to and reviewed and hopefully, you’ll be inspired to start getting ready for the season too!
